The Ministry of Labor will from Sunday ban all domestic workers, including drivers and maids, from transferring their sponsorship to private firms.

This is a measure to stop domestic workers from leaving their individual sponsors, which includes families, according to a report carried by the Saudi Press Agency.

The ministry reportedly stated that the decision was taken to ensure that workers stay where they are needed in the labor market.
Arab News could not get further comment from the ministry at the time of going to press.

Domestic workers usually include drivers, janitors, cleaners, waiters, gardeners, household managers and maids working for individuals.

The ministry has meanwhile launched an electronic service for private firms to submit recruitment requests. The first phase would allow for an electronic application followed up by a meeting with a labor official. The second phase would ensure the entire process is completed electronically.
